Australia is a country with a lot to offer travelers from all walks of life. A vibrant people, astounding natural beauty and a mix of cultural influences from all over the world as well as from the Aboriginals who were the first to call Australia home are all factors that attract scores of tourists to visit Australia each year. The casual tourist will undoubtedly find no shortage of diversions to interest and entertain, while those with a more specific interest in mind will also benefit from the wide range of attractions on offer.

For golfers, this is particularly true. A predominantly pleasant climate and a lot of open space dominated by nature give Australia all the foundation it needs to be a great golfing destination, and in recent decades the country has been rising to the challenge by producing a large number of world-class golf courses and estates. From small, secluded ranges to professional-grade fairways, Australia has the golf course to suit your playing style while also providing you with an unforgettable holiday experience.

Of course, the varied terrain that makes up mainland Australia means that spectacular and diverse golf courses are to be found throughout the country. For some visitors, this means that choosing a particular region and exploring the various golf courses to be found there is best, while others might prefer to select a few of the best courses in the country to move between during the course of their visit.

hamilton island
Undoubtedly one of the most spectacular courses in the country as far as the surrounding scenery goes, many Aussie golfers would put Hamilton Island Golf Club near the top of their must-play list. As Australia’s only championship golf course, it holds high renown among local golfers. A relatively new course designed by Peter Thomson, the course is actually situated on Dent Island, a short ferry ride from the actual Hamilton Island. Having the island mostly to itself, the course also offers a pleasant amount of seclusion, allowing you to focus on your game with the only distraction being the amazing views.

From the coastal beauty of Queensland to another type of scenery entirely, the province of Victoria is home to Kingston Heath, another of Australia’s premier golf courses. Situated along Melbourne’s famous Sandbelt, home to a number of courses that make it difficult to choose which one to play on. Kingston Heath stands out, however, due to its highly playable layout and challenging use of MacKenzie bunkers, lush fairways, slick greens, the occasional tea tree, and a number of shorter holes. While gaining access to this highly exclusive club is not always easy, the rewards of the game speak for themselves.

Over in Western Australia, even more varied courses attract golfers from the world over to test their abilities. Among these is the beautiful and challenging course known simply as The Cut. This course is situated between the Indian Ocean and the Harvey Estuary, just over an hour’s drive south of Perth. The fickle wind can often provide a blustery challenge at this course, demanding low-bound links play at its most exciting, while the saucers, bowls, and rolling fairways add to the intensity. Although only opened in 2005, The Cut has already been rated Western Australia’s number one golf course multiple times, and is steadily growing in popularity among local and international players alike.

New South Wales boasts an entirely different kind of landscape that makes for a truly beautiful golfing experience. At Bonville Golf Course, players are surrounded by towering mountains covered in lush greenery, and must negotiate the sub-tropical rainforest and tall, swaying gum trees between holes. In fact, the holes are so separated from each other by the existing nature that at times it can feel as though you have the entire course to yourself. The course is fairly extensive, and the dense foliage tends to swallow up a great deal of stray balls, but for those willing to get into the zone of playing in such a dramatically scenic location, the experience is an unforgettable one.

Tasmania is another exotic part of Australia renowned by golfers, in no small part due to the fact that the sport had its Australian beginnings in this part of the country. One course that golfers from far and wide always tend to mention in the same breath as Tasmania is Barnbougle Dunes. As the name would suggest, this course is punctuated by rows of undulating dunes that skirt a rugged coastline, making play a decidedly dynamic and challenging experience. Here, too, the existing nature has been allowed to blend seamlessly with the well-designed course, creating an impression that the course itself is just another natural feature.

For a standout golfing experience that is truly one of Australia’s most prestigious places to play, the Royal Adelaide is among the best of South Australia’s many wonderful courses, and is also the country’s oldest established club. The course was designed by two Australian golfing laureates and later revised by famed course designer Dr. Alister MacKenzie, who incorporated the natural features of the existing site into the course itself, securing its place as one of the country’s premier golfing destinations. Today, the club sees golfers both professional and amateur visit on a regular basis to take in the stunning natural beauty while enjoying a challenging and rewarding game.

nullarbor links
While the above list arguably includes the cream of Australia’s golf courses, one course remains that presents a truly unique and eccentric take on the typical golf course that is truly a great example of the Australian approach to convention. Claiming to be the world’s longest golf course, Nullarbor Links takes the idea of links play to its extreme, with eighteen holes stretching across an incredible 1400 kilometeres. Players begin at the first hole in Ceduna, South Australia, and drive on a scenic route between holes (some of which are hundreds of kilometers apart) through the rugged outback toward the final 18th hole at Kalgoorlie in Western Australia. Undoubtedly one of the most unusual concepts in modern golfing, this course offers the travelling golfing experience of a lifetime, with plenty of time to reflect on your play and take in the scenery as you travel from hole to hole. This course is surely one not to be missed by any golfer seeking a different kind of playing experience.

The courses mentioned here represent just a fraction of the many different establishments offering a world-class golfing experience all over Australia. Wherever you decide to play, you can be sure that an unforgettable experience awaits you.
